Fake Drivers License Italy
We've been hearing conflicting information and maybe someone can help. I know that if you (an american) plan to be here short-term and want to drive, it's recommended that you go to AAA for an International Drivers Permit before you arrive here.

But for people staying longer term - at what point are you supposed to get an Italian patente? Like i said, i don't want to go into more detail, but we've been hearing conflicing info and the latest we heard has people taking 9 weeks of courses, twice a week!!! This seems absurd - some of our friends have been driving for 30-40 years and they have to retake driver's training courses?! Has anyone had any experience with this? I used an international drivers permit (IDP) for my first year in, which is really just an official translation of your national license and is an adjunct to it. The IDP is valid for just one year, although my US license was valid for three more years.
When the IDP expired, I had a few months' gap before I could take my Italian driving test. I asked it I could continue to drive; after all, my real license was still valid, and the IDP is only a translation. The owner of the driving school was a good friend of my husband, and he was very insistent that there was no way I could continue to drive with just my American license. So for a few months I didn't drive at all. My husband has a certain reputation to maintain in our town and I didn't want to cause him any embarrassment. It seems that in theory, you can take the tests without taking the driving lessons, but the red tape and paperwork are so onerous that it's easier to just take the lessons.
I did have to take all the driving lessons, including road courses, although I had been driving for years (manual transmission even). They always took two or three people out together for the road courses, and they took turns driving. It was usually me and a few teenagers, or a middle-aged Albanian woman who had never been behind a wheel before. That was a complete waste of time.
At least the theory classes were useful, because the written test is not at all easy. Much, much harder than the written tests I've taken in the US. Foreigners who have trouble with written Italian can opt to take an oral test instead, but the questions are the same. I was advised to do that, but at that point I had less trouble reading Italian than understanding the local dialect, so I took the written test.
I passed with flying colors; actually I had the highest grade in the group who took it with me. I suppose I was so scared I overstudied. The road test was very easy. They had four students in the car and each drove for a bit. One kid ran into a wall (no real damage) and still passed the test. Definitely, as bibimbob mentioned, taking a driving course (over €1500 for one here in which is highway robbery) seems to pave the way to obtaining a license quickly.
Especially Mercogliano where I think DanaCH lives must be one of the most calmest places to drive. When we were there, I was taken aback when cars actually stopped for pedestrians (us)crossing the street. Mercogliano seemed even nicer with the convenience of many big stores yet less traffic.
Driving rules are supposedly the same in all of, however, driving habits seem awfully different between, for example, and. I like this footage of a scooter in the or maybe Mergellina area of Napoli: Buona Fortuna.
